Candle Care 101
How to property care for and burn your candles for hours of enjoyment
Wooden Wicks offer a soothing, crackling flame that adds an ambient touch to any room. But their soft, cedar-infused wooden wicks require special care and attention if you want to get the most out of them. With the right maintenance routine, you can extend you candle’s burning time and maximize its potential.
Cotton Wicks candles are the traditional option, and they use a cotton wick, which is tightly braided to create a stable and consistent flame. These wicks can be made from 100% cotton, lead-free and no paper core. Cotton wicks have been used for centuries, and they are still the most popular choice for candles.
1. Prepare Your Candle Before Burning
Always keep your wood wick trimmed to 1/4 of an inch to ensure optimal burn time and flame height. Before relighting your candle, simply clip or pinch the burned portion of the wick, taking care not to get any ash into the wax. Only trim wicks on a thoroughly cooled candle.
Trimming prevents a faster rate of fuel consumption, helps control fragrance throw, minimizes soot and black smoke, and promotes an even burn pool. Make sure to keep your trimmings away from the burning candle as these may reignite!
2. Allow the Wax Pool to Reach the Edges
The first time + every time you burn your candle, it is essential to burn long enough for the wax pool to reach the edge of the vessel. This can take 2 to 3 hours. Not burning your candle long enough to reach a full-width wax pool may lead to tunneling issues. Never burn your candle longer than 4 hours at a time.
3. Put Out The Flame Properly
Wooden wicks should always be put out properly after a burn session. When blowing out your candle, make sure to do it gently and slowly, such as in one long breath with your mouth open to avoid the air hitting the flame directly. This will also protect your wooden wick from burning off prematurely, which can cause it to become too short to properly light and burn in future uses.
Helpful Checklist
With your first burn, at a minimum, ensure the wax melts all the way to the edges before extinguishing the flame
Not allowing the wax to evenly melt may cause something called "tuneling" which can result in holes forming in your candle
Never burn your candle for longer than 4 hours at a time. Burning longer than this can cause the candle to overheat, resulting in future melting and fragrance issues
Before each burn, make sure to trim as much of the blackened wood from the wick as possible
